Description

Adolescence is a time of intense brain development in systems that support social and ethical thinking, meaning-making, and emotional feelings. It is also a time of intense social engagement, in which youths conceptualize their personal values and learnings while they navigate different cultural understandings from parents, peers, schools, and the broader society. How can we as parents or new youth work practitioners understand and appreciate this phase of youth development? How do we take advantage of this phase of their lives and help them be engaged and succeed in the areas that they want to achieve or do well? Come and learn.

Held on the last Saturday of every alternate month.

TRAINER PROFILE

Nicholas Gabriel Lim has been working with youths for almost twenty years. Trained in psychology, his work with youths is informed by neuroscience and he lectures extensively about it. He wrote about his practice and experiences in a recently published book “Clash of the Mind and Heart: Playbook for Helping Youths Succeed”.

Learner will be introduced to everything that Nicholas has written in his book, to equp them with the knowledge and skills to improve the relationship between their teens and them. Learners can expect to bring to the class their challenges with youths, and to role play with Nicholas using some of the strategies he teaches. Learners are encouraged to dialogue and even ‘spar’, candidly speaking, with Nicholas to ensure meaningful learning takes place.

Nicholas’ work with youth all these years has helped him to become an astute practitioner. As a result, he is often consulted for his views and expertise by parents, educators, professionals, and even government agencies. He has been invited to lend his expertise on national councils like the Media Literacy Council and the National Council for Problem Gambling. Most recently, he was appointed by Her Excellency President Halimah Yacob, as an Advisor to the Singapore Youth Court. Nicholas also recently completed his Juris Doctor programme, and looks forward to sharing his new learnings.
